Product information
If you have sore and cracked nipples, Medela breast shields will protect you and help your skin heal faster, preventing chafing caused by clothes.
Breastfeeding is a special experience that often comes with difficulties. Especially in the first days of breastfeeding, when you and the baby are just getting used to it, the problem of painful or even cracked nipples may appear. After all, your sensitive nipples are not used to the pressure and suction power that comes with regular baby feeding. After some time, the discomfort should gradually subside – if it does not, seek advice from a lactation consultant or breastfeeding specialist . In the meantime, using protective breast shields (also called nipple shields) will prevent your nipples from rubbing against your clothing, thereby speeding up the healing process.
- The precisely fitting silicone surface is pleasant for sensitive skin
- Ventilation holes allow the skin to breathe, supporting its regeneration
- The flexible form adapts to the shape of the breast
- Can be worn all day between feeding sessions
- A shape that doesn’t show under clothes
How do nipple shields work?
Breast shields are placed in the bra, where they prevent the fabric from rubbing against sensitive or sore nipples , enabling skin regeneration and accelerating healing. When using nipple shields, it’s a good idea to wear a nursing bra, which usually offers a bit more space than a standard bra so that the shields fit easily inside. However, you don’t have to worry about Medela breast shields showing through clothing – their low profile ensures a natural look of the breasts. You can wear the covers at all times between feeding sessions; however, avoid wearing them at night as this can make sensitive nipples worse.
How to use Medela nipple shields
Medela breast shields consist of two parts: a soft, flexible silicone membrane that is pleasant to sensitive skin, and an outer part with ventilation holes to allow the skin to breathe. They are very easy to assemble:
- Place the membrane on the outer part, pressing it around the entire perimeter.
- After folding, insert the cover into the bra so that the opening in the membrane is opposite the nipple. The holes should face up.
Milk can collect in the breast shields during the day. However, you should not give it to the baby – pour out the accumulated milk when cleaning the covers
Washing nipple shields
As with other breastfeeding accessories, nipple shields require good hygiene. Before using the covers for the first time – and once a day thereafter – disinfect them by following a few simple steps:
- Place the separated parts of the cover in a small vessel filled with cold water – ideally distilled water, but you can also use tap water with a teaspoon of citric acid to prevent limescale build-up.
- Bring the water to a boil and let it boil for about five minutes.
- Carefully pour out the water and let the parts of the cover dry on a clean cloth.
- You can also use the Medela Quick Clean™ microwave disinfection bag.
Remember to wash breast shields after each use. Separate the parts of the cover and wash them with a mild cleaning solution. Then rinse them thoroughly in cold water and let them dry on a clean cloth.
